Domaining

July 19, 2007

Just letting the world know and especially the search engines that I’m starting a new blog over at domainSEM.com with the aim of posting my experiences as a novice domainer. No posts there yet as I write this one other than a hello world type starter post.

There seems to be a fair amount of interest in domaining at the moment and maybe there’s a bit of frothy hype about too. But we’ll have a bash at it and see where we go.

Network Newsletters

I find a few network newsletters in my inbox this evening. Tradedoubler can claim the boobie prize for the hard-to-read smallest font.

falselimbs.com No Leg Pulling

July 13, 2007

I’ve mentioned before that I’m interested in buying and reselling domain names for profit. Haven’t sold anything yet but I’ve acquired a couple that I hope might receive a few type-ins.

One generic name that I had dreamt up was falselimbs.com – thing is, I wasn’t convinced that that name was worth it …I hadn’t made up my mind if, as a generic name it had any legs (groan!). Well it’s twisted someone elses arm (more groans!) I see, because someone is having a punt – it was registered only this Wednesday – amazing!

I’ve created a google alert to keep my eye on it …oh damn falseeyes.com has gone too!

This Blogs Keyword Searches #2

July 13, 2007

I started reporting some of the keyword phrases that this blog receives in May and suggested I’d repeat monthly. Looks like I missed June for whatever reason – but with a Google calendar task now in action I’ll try and do better from now on. When I mention to people that I blog I do get a few raised eyebrows – what’s the point of doing that? people ask. I give a couple of reasons for blogging:

  • I do it mainly because you don’t know where it might lead you. I’ve stumbled upon loads of useful info since I started this blog that I never otherwise would have found.
  • You can rank in the search results as a result of blogging. Now search marketing is a pretty well covered topic blogging wise but for other industries/interests that might not be the case – so free, interested, visitors might be up for grabs for your chosen topic
  • It helps you to stay in-tune with your chosen topic
  • And it only takes your time. Blogger, wordpress, etc all offer a freebie service.

So here’s a sample of this last months upthejunction keyword searches:

  • bikes and bras
  • richard farleigh
  • deborah meaden
  • kieron donoghue
  • jess luthi bog
  • adjug
  • betty boo
  • marketing consultancy
  • affiliate easyjet
  • “sell text links”
  • marketing blog uk

Not surprisingly, following my recent mention, I received quite a few long tail searches for Betty Boo – though nothing too salacious!

Is Vic There?

July 3, 2007

Google has announced that it has acquired grandcentral.com – a (USA service) company that manages your voice communications and lets you have one personal phone number for life (I think).

Having a personal phone number, owned by you rather than your provider is of course a great idea if you get all the functionality you need. Wasn’t there a UK personal phone number company sometime ago offering 07000 numbers or something (I’m not up on my phone technology)? Makes alot of sense to me so long as it all works correctly.

I’m guessing that google will want to turn this service into yet another ad platform – maybe they’ll be able to contextualise your voice messages and insert audio ads between them? Privacy issues abound!

Is Vic There? Showing my age a little I suppose. 80’s band Department S

Adjug.com

July 3, 2007

Kieron Donoghue has an interesting post about adjug.com (go take a look – I won’t repeat what’s already been said).

If you’ve got a site that you’re struggling to monetise sufficiently with adsense or whatever maybe this could be a way forward for you? It looks interesting. Remember of course, google isn’t too keen on those naughty boys and girls who buy and sell text links though, if you’re tempted to go down that road.

I’ve just had a quick glance and spotted an old finance site that I’m aware of that’s signed up. Nick, if you’re reading ..you’ll spot it too!
