How To Submit Content To Google

September 22, 2008

Google appear to have beefed-up their content submission – take a look at this new content submission page.

Personally, I’ve not manually submitted a new URL to Google (or Yahoo, MSN) for years as I rely on new sites being found from links elsewhere – but I guess many first-time webmasters do. Possibly of more use are the links to:

  • the local business centre
  • webmaster central
  • google base

I’m having a play with google base myself at the moment – it’s something that’s been on my to-do list for far too long and I’m finally starting to use it. I’m fairly certain that you can’t use it to promote pure affiliate sites though – I’m using it to detail our website design services as a familiarisation exercise. If you’ve got any tips relating to getting benefit from google base please do get in touch or leave a comment.

As is often the case, the Google Content team have started a new blog – though if you follow this tip of mine, you’ll have spotted it already.

How Many Wirral Domains Are There?

September 10, 2008

I was wondering how many domains are indexed that are explicity Wirral related. I say indexed because of course there could many domain names that are:

  • inactive
  • parked (parked domains are not always indexed)
  • not yet spidered by the search engines
  • blocking the search engines via robots.txt

Of course, there could many sites (mine for example, or our famous golf club) that are Wirral related but have an unrelated domain name. Anyways, using the allinurl:wirral*.co.uk construct I can see that approx 81,000 domains that include Wirral in the URL before the .co.uk are currently indexed. Try it yourself using this search and see what results you get.
