500 Plus Comments, More Every Week
March 10, 2008
Back In September I had a small success with a fictional domain name that was mentioned on the telly. The domain received a few hundred hits and I made a couple of quid with a tie-up with Friends Reunited (no longer available on dgm).
So having then watched Matt Damon search for Sewell and Marbury in The Bourne Ultimatum movie I created another fictional domain. I hoped I might simply recoup the domain reg fees, though that isn’t looking likely to be honest!
What has been really interesting is the sheer volume of comments the blog has received from all corners of the globe. From Wales to Finland to China, people have taken the time to search out the site in the first instance and then to leave a comment. Comments went through the five hundred mark the other week and I continue to approve more every week.
I think what it demonstrates is that blogs can and do attract the attention of the searching public. If your blog is offering a paid-for product or service then you can benefit from the free traffic …nothing earth shattering I know, that’s why we all blog of course - we want the attention for whatever reason!
As a last example related to film/TV related content, I happened to mention Willies Wonky chocolate factory on my new chocolate site last week and I’ve had a spike in both visitors and comments over the last 7-10 days with that too. Hopefully some timely Easter sales will soon follow!
Flickr Stats
February 11, 2008
I’ve just been adding a couple of photos to my flickr account and having a browse through my account settings. I’d not noticed it before, but flickr now offer viewing stats for your photos and I can now see stats such as these: 15% of my viewers have come direct from google, 8% from this blog and 32% from within flickr itself. My most popular photo is the one of my google memory card that I blogged about last December.
You have to activate the stats and allegedly come back the following day to see them, though mine were available within 15 minutes.
I actually use flickr more than most other social networking sites because it find it useful. I’ve accounts at stumbleupon, linkedin and facebook but I hardly use them currently. I’ll endeavour to make an effort with these at some point, especially the applications and groups stuff within facebook (as recommended by, amongst others, Lee McCoy) but I just can’t be bothered with all that virtual bomb throwing, poking, wall writing palaver.
Rucku
October 12, 2007
I’ve developed a sort of compulsive disorder whereby I’m forever ripping snippets of articles from newspapers and magazines to keep as reminders for web ideas/research.
This cutting was taken from a copy of yesterdays Times that a previous train traveller had kindly left for me to read on my way to Liverpool for a couple of beers. Anyway this one was to remind me to look at Will Carling’s social networking site for rugby fans (not that I’m a big fan of the game) - subtly named rucku.com . There’s going to be a social networking site for just about every like-minded interest group that you can think of sooner or later. Each and everyone no doubt attempting to fund themselves with supporting ads.
Anyway my Guinness induced idea for a similar site for hockey enthusiasts - pucku.com - has fallen flat due to the domain being already registered and me not being prepared to offer a bid for it!
Why Is Blogger In German?
September 28, 2007
I’m a regular user of blogger and have seen it throw a few funnies every now and again. The latest is that it obviously thinks I’m based in Germany (well the last time I looked The Wirral was in the UK) because I keep seeing messages like (link changed to google):
in einem neuen Fenste
which I’m fairly certain means in a new window
Anybody else experiencing this or is it just me?
Product Placement Reaches youtube.com
September 26, 2007
The latest email from springwise covers an interesting new service. A possibly unique service from new Canadian outfit brandfame.com is aiming to bring advertisers and social video producers together in order for the advertiser to pay for product placements in videos aired on social video sites such as youtube, grouper, metacafe and the like. Take a look at the guided tours for a little more info.
Whilst it’s early days I think there might be some mileage in this idea. Well worth watching for progress.
I’d recommend subscribing to springwise by the way - they cover some great new business ideas.
September 25, 2007
What can you do when you’re not able to comment upon a blog post?
For instance, I’ve stumbled upon a new blog entitled The Travel Affiliate, a new blog by a fellow affiliate marketer covering the travel industry. It looks like it could be worth following so I’ve subscribed to the feed. Although we’re not currently that active within the travel and holiday industry we do have our online travel tickets site that we could (and should) do more with.
But as the Travel Affiliate blog requires you to login to comment and I don’t have a login ID I’m unable to post a comment to say hello or whatever. Now this may be entirely intentional by the blog author as some writers simply don’t want all and sundry commenting upon what’s been said. I suspect though that’s not the case in this instance - search marketers who blog tend to enjoy the benefits of online networking that blogging offers.
Now, as The Travel Affiliate uses wordpress as his blogging platform he may notice this post of mine in his reported incoming links and get in touch. Let’s see what happens.

New, New Blogger
June 14, 2007
Stumbled upon a new google blog this morning that should be of interest to any of you that use blogger. blogger in draft is a new blog detailing some new features that may or may not end up in a future release of blogger. Unusually for a google, blog comments are enabled - though a quick glance at those already there indicates comment quality issues ahead.
As I’ve been messing with wordpress this week for a new little idea, you realise just how much available functionality there is outside the cosy world of blogger. Though it has to be said that I got myself confused with wordpress.org and wordpress.com - most confusing to begin with (I ended up with going with .org and then buying a hosting package at dreamhost).
So, if you like blogger you can now get to peek at some of the features that may come along. Personally I’d like to see multi-page support and far more templates.
A New Bloggers Social Network
May 25, 2007
This morning I signed up to a new digg style social network that intends to be just for bloggers. Currently in alpha, bloggbuzz is pitching for contributions from us bloggers and this is what they want to achieve:
Blogg-Buzz is a blogger driven site, exclusively for bloggers like you, to share, discover and promote blog posts that you find interesting!
I’ve signed up and I’ll give it a go for a while. My user name is anotherjunction so feel free to add me as a friend ‘cos I’m currently Billy No-Mates.
